A collection of the best astronomy books from eight centuries, The
Astronomers' Library is a rich history of astronomy (and astrology)
publishing across Europe with outstanding publications from
Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, UK, as well as many
from Persia as the middle east was the original world leader in
recording the study of the stars. Â Humankind has looked to
the heavens since the dawn of time, wondering what is out there as
well as how everything works and (originally) who is responsible
for it. Every tribe, race or civilization has wondered about our
place in the universe and what lies beyond and what lies within it,
below our feet. Lately attention has turned to the origins of the
universe. From the turn of the millennium, knowledge and ideas were
recorded, first on tablets or rock, then simple manuscripts and
eventually in much more elaborate fashion as illustrative and
engraving skills evolved. The advent of printed books saw the
production of highly illustrated tomes that showed off the skills
of the printers as well as the newfound knowledge of the scholars
and artists that wrote them. Â Many of these works pushed the
boundaries of illustrated publishing (and continue to do so to this
day). They commanded expert illustrators and skilled engravers and
hence didn’t come cheaply. They were treasured in the libraries
of the wealthy and their intrinsic worth has meant that there is an
incredible wealth of beautifully preserved historic examples from
the 14th century onwards  The significant difference we
acknowledge today between astronomy and astrology has a relatively
recent past, and the stars have long been associated with
creatures, gods, characters and all sorts of divine beings. The
study of such has a long, fascinating history that is shown in
beautiful detail in the pages of these many beautiful books, and
the transition from seeing the stars as characters to understanding
them as spinning, celestial beings and part of our huge universe is
akin to witnessing the history of the world. Â As far back as
the tenth century, Persian scholars such as Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi
was recording his findings, observations and speculations on the
wider universe, in his Book of Fixed Stars. The focus turned to
Europe in the Middle Ages, with Germany, Holland and England the
centres of study and publication. Following the “Copernican
Revolutionâ€, observation and study underwent a radical change,
paving the way for astronomers such as Kepler, Galilei and Newton
to shed further light on the nature of the planets and stars of our
known systems, and the ground beneath our feet. Each of those
famous names contribute to the illustrated books that are featured
within. Â
Recently at the Visible Learning Conference, Professor John Hattie
stood up in his opening address and said, "I'm looking at you all
and thinking 'What if I got this wrong?'" I feel the same way when
educators ask to visit and I always end up in the same place - that
Keilor Views is a living, breathing example that he didn't. --
Charles Branciforte, Principal of Keilor Views Primary School,
Melbourne, Australia Visible Learning into Action takes the next
step in the evolving Visible Learning story. It translates one of
the biggest and most critically acclaimed education research
projects ever undertaken into case studies of actual success
stories, implementing John Hattie's ideas in the classrooms of
schools all around the world. The evidenced case studies presented
in this book describe the Visible Learning journeys of fifteen
schools from Australia, USA, Hong Kong, UK, Sweden, New Zealand and
Norway and are representative of the VL international community of
schools in their quest to ensure all of their students exceed their
potential for academic success. Each school's story will inform and
inspire, bringing to life the discussions, actions and reflections
from leaders, teachers, students and families. This book features
extensive, interactive appendices containing study guide questions
to encourage critical thinking, annotated endnotes with
recommendations for further reading and links to YouTube and
relevant websites. Drawing on the latest research into the major
principles and strategies of learning, this essential resource is
structured into five parts: Know thy impact; Effective feedback;
Visible learners; Inspired and passionate teachers; The Visible
Learning School. Visible Learning into Action is aimed at any
student, teacher or parent requiring an up-to-date commentary on
how research into human learning processes can inform our teaching
and what goes on in our schools.

Toby Jones stars in this three-part BBC adaptation of John
Lanchester's novel. The drama centres around the residents of the
fictional Pepys Road in South London, where houses cost a small
fortune. Occupiers of the street vary from those who have lived
there since before the London property boom, including elderly
widow Petunia Howe (Gemma Jones), to the recently moved in
wealthier residents, including banker Roger Hunt (Jones). After all
of the street's residents receive mysterious postcards bearing the
message 'We want what you have', the interweaving connections
between them begin to unravel.
WHAT VALUABLE COMPANY IS NOBODY BUILDING?
The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine. If you are copying these guys, you aren’t learning from them. It’s easier to copy a model than to make something new: doing what we already know how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar. Every new creation goes from 0 to 1. This book is about how to get there.
"A gut-wrenching, wildly inspiring story about overcoming the most
daunting obstacles through steely tenacity, sheer will, and a great
big dose of motherly love." --Jeannette Walls, #1 New York Times
bestselling author of The Glass Castle An inspirational and
powerful memoir from the United States's most decorated winter
Paralympic or Olympic athlete, The Hard Parts is Oksana Masters
gripping account of overcoming extraordinary Chernobyl
disaster-caused physical challenges to create a life that
challenges everyone to push through what is holding them back.
Oksana Masters was born in Ukraine--in the shadow of
Chernobyl--seemingly with the odds stacked against her. She came
into the world with one kidney, a partial stomach, six toes on each
foot, webbed fingers, no right bicep, and no thumbs. Her left leg
was six inches shorter than her right, and she was missing both
tibias. Relinquished to the orphanage system by birth parents
daunted by the staggering cost of what would be their child's
medical care, Oksana encountered numerous abuses, some horrifying.
Salvation came at age seven when Gay Masters, an unmarried American
professor who saw a photo of the little girl and became haunted by
her eyes, waged a two-year war against stubborn adoption
authorities to rescue Oksana from her circumstances. In America,
Oksana endured years of operations that included a double leg
amputation. Still, how could she hope to fit in when there were so
many things making her different? As it turned out, she would do
much more than fit in. Determined to prove herself and fueled by a
drive to succeed that still smoldered from childhood, Oksana
triumphed in not just one sport but four--winning against the
world's best in elite rowing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, and
road cycling competitions. Now considered one of the world's top
athletes, she is the recipient of seventeen Paralympic medals, the
most of any US athlete of the Winter Games, Paralympic or Olympic.
Oksana's astonishing story of journeying through a series of dark
tunnels is "as true a tale of grit as I've ever heard, with a
message filled with triumph and beauty--that what doesn't kill us
makes us stronger, if we are loved" (Angela Duckworth, New York
Times bestselling author of Grit).
This new study explores the development of the window, showing how
it both transformed human experience by increasing access to light
and air and changed our perception of architectural space
Christopher Masters celebrates the multiple roles of the window in
architecture by providing engaging commentaries on over 80
exceptional buildings of all types, both ancient and modern. The
unique selection ranges from the Pantheon in Rome, the Hagia Sophia
in Istanbul, Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, and the Katsura Imperial
Villa in Kyoto to Walter Gropius's Bauhaus in Dessau, Eero
Saarinen's TWA Terminal in New York, Jean Nouvel's Louvre Abu
Dhabi, and Dorte Mandrup's Icefjord Centre in Greenland. Featuring
more than 100 superb photographs, this is an intriguing and
accessible survey of a formerly neglected subject in architectural
history.

About seventy-one per cent of the Earth's surface is water, and
even on dry land we remain closely connected to aquatic life. It
provides us with oxygen, food, medicine and materials. Wild
waterlife infiltrates our lives in many surprising ways. Every
other breath we take is filled with oxygen provided by
ocean-dwelling microscopic plants. A type of seaweed provides a
means to directly test whether people are infected with viruses,
including Covid-19. Robotics design takes inspiration from a pike's
ability to accelerate with greater g-force than a Porsche. Wild
Waters by Susanne Masters is a celebration of the breadth of
wildlife that can be found in and around our varied waterways, from
oceans and rivers to rock pools and ponds. Armchair explorers can
read a fascinating account of how aquatic plants and animals enrich
human life. Swimmers, paddleboarders, dog walkers, families and
anyone with a passion for the great outdoors can learn about local
wildlife, including when and where to look for different species
without causing any harm. With stunning illustrations by Alice
Goodridge, Wild Waters provides a tantalising insight into the
world beneath the surface.
Though Graeco-Roman antiquity (‘classics’) has often been considered the handmaid of colonialism, its various forms have nonetheless endured through many of the continent’s decolonising transitions. Southern Africa is no exception. This book canvasses the variety of forms classics has taken in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and especially South Africa, and even the dynamics of transformation itself.
How does (u)Mzantsi classics (of southern Africa) look in an era of profound change, whether violent or otherwise? What are its future prospects? Contributors focus on pedagogies, historical consciousness, the creative arts and popular culture.
The volume, in its overall shape, responds to the idea of dialogue – in both the Greek form associated with Plato’s rendition of Socrates’ wisdom and in the African concept of ubuntu. Here are dialogues between scholars, both emerging and established, as well as students – some of whom were directly impacted by the Fallist protests.
Rather than offering an apologia for classics, these dialogues engage with pressing questions of relevance, identity, change, the canon, and the dynamics of decolonisation and potential recolonisation. The goal is to interrogate classics – the ways it has been taught, studied, perceived, transformed and even lived – from many points of view.
